Wow, what a finale!
Peaky Blinders has kept us glued to our screens since 2013. But, after last month’s final episode, the Shelby story is finally over. In honour of a fantastic series, we thought we’d take a look at our top 5 most iconic moments from Peaky Blinders history.
Spoiler alert! Some of these highlights will give away major plot twists from the series.
Without further ado, let’s get into it:
The showdown with Billy Kimber
In no particular order, we start with the culmination of Series 1. Billy Kimber is the main villain of the first series of Peaky Blinders, and the war between him and the Shelbys forms the main narrative thrust of the series.
This comes to head with the two rival gangs going head-to-head on the Birmingham streets. The Shelbys look hopelessly outgunned until communist Freddie Thorne comes out swinging for them with the notorious Lewis machine guns referenced throughout the show.
Despite Ada’s attempt to quell the violence, Tommy murders Kimber with a single shot from his pistol. Electric stuff.

Tommy Shelby rides into town
This isn’t so much a major plot point, but a significant tone-setting moment for the show. In the first episode, we meet Tommy for the first time, riding his black horse through the murky Watery Lane, in post-war Birmingham.
As the theme song, Red Right Hand by the wonderful Nick Cave, goes: “On a gathering storm comes a tall, handsome man / In a dusty black coat with a red right hand.” A picture tells a thousand words, and from this scene alone we get a strong sense of Tommy’s power and charisma.
Alfie Solomons comes back from the dead
Nobody saw this one coming.
Tom Hardy’s Jewish gangster, Alfie Solomons, was supposedly dead and buried after Tommy shoots him at the climax of Series 4. But, at the end of Series 5, Solomons comes back with a bang, setting up his reintroduction to the show’s final series nicely.
John Shelby gets shot
The Shelbys were equipped with a good amount of plot armour for the early Peaky Blinders series’. That ended with John’s Christmas Day murder at the hands of the bloodthirsty Changretta family. Really? On Christmas?
Anyway, after John gets riddled with bullets and dies, fans realised that no one on the hit BBC drama was safe.

This classic line wasn’t so oft-parroted as it is now in Peaky Blinders’ early days. But, after Arthur growls it into the microphone at Sabini’s London nightclub, its ascent to cultural ubiquity was all but guaranteed. As the Shelby brothers cause mayhem in the capital after a night on the lash, this rallying cry uttered to the terrified club patrons cements Peaky Blinders’ status as a modern classic.
